From the Bosphorus to the Turkish north and Cappadocia — what to know before you rent a car in Türkiye.

Which suits you?

Self-drive or with a driver?

Best outside Istanbul

Ideal for the north (Trabzon, Uzungol), Cappadocia, and the coasts — excellent highways and stunning scenery.

Cheaper for longer trips

Fixed daily cost with no driver fee, free cancellation on most deals.

Easier inside Istanbul

City traffic is heavy and parking is hard — a driver handles all of it.

Peace of mind for families

No need to know the roads or language — great for late arrivals and day tours.

What you need to rent

  • A valid driver's license — strongly recommended to get an International Driving Permit before travel.
  • Passport and a credit card in the driver's name for the deposit.
  • Minimum age is usually 21 (varies by company and car class).

Driving tips for Türkiye

  • Tolls are electronic (HGS) — bridges and motorways charge via an electronic tag. Confirm your rental has one and ask how tolls are billed to you.
  • Drive on the right — intercity roads are excellent and comfortable.
  • Avoid driving inside Istanbul if you can — pick the car up when leaving the city or straight from the airport.
  • Photograph the car from all sides at pickup and document any existing scratches.
